Adventures with cake

Recently my daughter asked me if I would make a cake for her boyfriend for his birthday. I said, “sure, what kind does he like?” The request for his favorite cake, a chocolate cherry cake, had me searching for recipes. The most stunning recipe I found was this, so I went with it.

It was not easy to make, and I did NOT use any gold foil — but it was really delicious. Needed more of the whipped cream filling – it sort of just blended into the cake. I also forgot to brush one of the layers with the Cherry Liqueur (which only came in a very large bottle – so I’m trying to find other uses for it post cake). One is to add a splash to bourbon on the rocks, along with cocktail cherries. Forgetting the liqueur was a minor omission and didn’t detract from the taste. I also used regular sized cake pans and did 2 layers vs. the 6″ cake pans and 3 layers.
